Volume way too high when using USB to 3.5mm jack adapter

Okay, so, given I have a pretty awkward schedule and I live with my family, using headphones when I'm on my laptop is pretty important. Unfortunately, the headphone jack died some time back, and I got a USB to 3.5mm jack adapter to get around the problem. However, when I have my headphones connected through the jack, the volume is way, WAY too high. I have the Windows volume slider set to 4, and sound is still almost unbearably loud.

I've tried going through my computer's proprietary audio management software, but whenever I do anything with it, it ignores the adapter and starts playing audio through the speakers instead. Is there any way to adjust the scale of the Windows volume slider so that I can actually use the other 96% of it?

Hi there,
You can try and turn down the voume on a specific port.
Go to
"control panel"
Then "Hardware and sound"
Then click "sound"
Right click on your device (make sure you select the adapter) and click "properties"
Then go to "levels"
You can change the master levels and the specific port volume here like shown in this picture:

Then adjust them to your preferences.
Hope this helps

Yeah, that was the first place I went, but this is all I've got in terms of settings.

Well in that case you may want to update your drivers...
But also make sure there's not any volume controls on the adapter or headphones themselves as I've forgot about them sometimes...
Whats your computers name and model?

Update which drivers? The dialog I'm accessing is just windows, and windows is up to date. The adapter's got no controls on it, and my headphones are just a direct connect. The adapter doesn't have a driver I can update either, it's just plug and play.
I'm using an Asus ROG G73Sw, windows 7 x64.

But that's the problem. If all my programs are set at 4 or below, then having all that space in the master slider is purely aesthetic - it doesn't do anything, I still only have 4 volume settings. I'd get more mileage out of adjusting the sound for all my games and apps within the programs, rather than using Windows, but that's tedious and awkward. I'd rather just fix the problem, which is why I'm posting here.
