Windows 7 Clean install with format or without? I'm not sure which to do. I re-installed Windows 7 last night, but used the upgrade option which I shouldn't have. I want to make sure the registry is completely clean, and don't want programs like Steam or Origin to get confused with the remnants in the directory of windows.old.

Hi Rovaira ,
clean install is your best option , by formating you will erase all data on you HDD or SSD completely and install a fresh untouched operating system
just remember to install from your manufacturers website for motherboard/laptop all the drivers you will need for you chipset , lan , sata , usb , gpu , audio etc and you will be fine

Should BIOS be in ACHI mode, or whatever the other one is when I do the clean install? I saw some other post about a clean install and someone mentioned that (but that was for Windows 8), and I have no idea what the different BIOS modes are and what they mean. I have an I7 2600K computer with 16 gigs ram if that helps (4 gigs went bad so currently 12 is installed; will install the other 4 gigs when it arrives in the mail.)

Yes, enable ACHI mode in BIOS. I had to reinstall Windows. Firstly, enable ACHI mode in your BIOS and then delete all your partitions. Then create a new partition to do a clean install.
