I built this rig a while ago trying to estimate/stay ahead of this generation's console specs. Made a bit of a mistake picking a card with 1gb VRAM and have had a generally bad experience with this HIS card. I'd like to go over to the GTX side of the force, but know very little about NVIDIA cards. What would be a decent step up on a reasonable budget?

My specs:

AMD FX 6300
4gb 1600mhz DDR3 RAM
HIS 1gb HD7850 GPU
MSI 970A-G46 MOBO
500w 80+ certified psu
Seagate 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s
Windows 8 pro 64 bit.

It would depend what do you understand by "reasonable budget" - please be more specific.

Other than that to be worth upgrading to something that would nearly double your frame rate in games from the nVidia side I would suggest GTX 770 ... but you will also have to change your PSU to at least 600W and from a well know brand (preferably 650W).

Although i am sure my suggested card will work on your system but can you please post the make and model of the power supply?

Woops, don't know why the name isn't posted on my profile's specs.

The PSU is a ZX Series Coolmax 500W (model ZX-500)

Still deciding on that "reasonable budget". I guess I'm more so just trying to replace the 7850 with something I should have purchased in the first place. Mid-range prices.

gtx760 and 770 are both good option, if you dont want to make the same mistake again this time you should for a 4gb version of the gpu u pick, we are already seing games that require more than 2gb of vram at 1080p and when the real next gen AAA titles will hit the pc market i'm pretty confident they will require for the most part around 3gb of vram at full settings..

Agree with the paitjsu here, titles like watch dogs, thief 2014 and if Second son infamous is released on pc and if GTA V is released they will eat graphics like you eat your favorite food. Also forgot assassins creed unity too. So don't make a mistake this time. And yeah upgrading the power supply is never never a bad idea (unless you are downgrading). Just buy a quality one and a strong be sure to read the reviews and then go with the supply and than the graphic card.
