Hi

Have you run hard disk diagnostics to test if you have a problem as mentioned above
Most Hard disk manufacturers produce a bootable CD or USB disk which can test all partitions on drive for physical damage

Have you ever conectered to a network or the internet ?
If you do not go on the Internet it is likely your Antivirus is not getting updated?
CD's & usb memory stick could contain virus or malware

Along time a go there was malware which deleted files at random

If your hard disk does not have any physical damage run chkdsk to look for file corruption

Try a bootable Antivirus boot disk such as Kaspersky Rescue CD
(other major AV companies including AVG have similar products)

If you PC has a option for 'power on' or BIOS password set it so that only you can switch it on and use it

This is not a solution but an extension of the same problem so I am asking it here - I am experiencing the same problem since around 6 Aug 2014. They affect thus far to my knowledge only excel files. I have a new HDD which I run chkdisk on and it says that all is well. I used it at work (Windows 7, Excel 2010) and home (Windows 8, Excel 2013). And have done that for the longest time - never had any problem. Until now. I also have ASAP Utilities in my both my Excel. And these files just keep disappearing. Index on HDD is turned on. Last night I finished working on the Excel file, shut it and ejected by HDD from home. This morning at work - the file does not exist at all. I run Windows Defender at home and Semantec endpoint is running at all times at work.
