Hey everyone,

I am currently having a problem with my PC.
I cannot get it to post let alone boot.

Here is what I did - I recently installed a new CPU fan and Ram.

Here are my specs -
CPU:FX - 6100 @ 3.3 Ghz
PWR Supply: Rosewill Capstone 750 Watts
Memory: 4x4GB G skill Ram (Added an extra 2 Dimms making it 16 GB)
Main Board: MSI 970a g46
Video Card: XFX 6850 HD 1GB
CPU fan - Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO

What is happening - The Computer boots up after I press the power button but will not respond to power off. The DVD drive will reply but nothing else. I have not gotten it to post yet.

Could it be the Power supply? I am saying that as everything seems to be in a low power state on boot. All Fans spin on low.

There is also no video - Just a black screen on boot.

Thanks for your time - Ben

First thing you should do is remove the two additional sticks of ram and see if that makes a difference.

I have tried this - It did not fix the problem...

Here is what I tried -

I tried re-seting the CMOS (No effect)
Removed the RAM tested each ram stick (No effect)
I have reseated the video card. (No effect)
Checked the power connections. (Triple Checked)

What I have not done -

Removed the new heat sink and try test with the old heat sink. (Might be using to much power?)

Question could it be the power supply? I am currently think that it might be the power supply due to the low power state the computer seems to be in.

If you have a spare PSU you can swap it out with to test.

I do but I do not trust it. It is a very old one. Does not have a 24 Pin power connector for the MOBO.

I am curious though - Does it matter what order that the power cables go into the Main board? Or would the PSU provide power regardless of placement?

thanks for you time and help so far :)

- Ben

EDIT:

Ok, So I am going back through the Tom hardware Archives and I have noticed a pattern of people getting their CPUs dislodged by the Hyper 212 (EVO or Plus)

I am going to reset my CPU in the morning and see if that fixes it :)

Also I have made sure that my ram is Seated in my computer. With the exception of one Ram chip which is lodged underneath my 212 EVO.

So - I am going to check and see if the CPU is dislodged or damaged. I am also going to make sure that the ram chip I could not get out is firmly seated as well.

All of this tomorrow morning. I will report back then :)

UPDATE:
Here is what we (Me and my dad) did today with the computer that refuses to post.

1. We did a complete reorganization of the case. Cleaned up cables, did cable organization, cleaned up the CPU/Heat-sink.
2. We made sure that the stands and screws were in the right places. So we ruled out shorting.
3. Computer will not post still. However it may be the power supply.or Video card. I am thinking it is the Power supply.
4. I re-seated the CPU, Heatsink, RAM as well as the Front panel adapters.

Here is why I think it is the PSU - I plug in one set of Power cables into the Video Card. It only boots into phase 1 power mode. If I plug in the other set of power cables into the video card - It boots into Phase 4 power mode so the motherboard is OK from my knowledge.

So I am strongly thinking that it is the PSU, part of it (The PSU) has gone or it has a weak/bad rail.

Anyway that is what I discovered today.

Well even if you don't trust the power supply you that's fine since you're not trying to run the system on it forever but instead trying to see if it will post. That shouldn't take more than a quick power on to identify that assuming the power supply can be trusted for at least that task.

(Edit) Just woke up so I just realized you already mentioned you tried my most recent thoughts. Seems to be also it's the power supply you could always go and pick one up to see if that makes a difference and if it does good and if not there's nothing wrong with returning it.

Hey - I am currently going to RMA my Main board and PSU. I have tried another video card in the system and it seems that it very well could be the mainboard and PSU.

Anyway - Here is why I say this - Power supply seems to give only a fraction of the power while the Main board does not output video on a low power card (8400 GT) I am going to RMA these 2 Items just to be safe :)
