I am looking for the best gaming monitor for $500 or less. I assume I can get a good 1440p monitor for this price but I don't really know much about monitors so I need some help. I would like it to be an IPS because I want good color unless there is a TN panel with good color that would be okay too and would like it to be 120hz. Would be nice if it had some built in speakers but it's not mandatory.

Specs:

CPU: i5-3570k
GPU: MSI Gtx 770 2gb
RAM: Ripjaws x series 8gb
MoBo: ASRock z77 Extreme4

Can my gpu run games like bf3, titanfall, etc. on 1440p with max or high settings?

Built-in speakers are generally of very poor quality.

I haven't seen an IPS monitor that go above 60 Hz (some Korean models are reported to be "overclock-able" but I don't have personal experience).

In general NT panels are recommended for people who predominantly play FPS games due to lower latency of these panels.

The higher the resolution the harder it hits the GPU performance so if for argument sake you did buy a 1440p 120 Hz monitor (I haven't seen one) then you won't be probably able to sustain 120FPS with your current GPU so it's a bit pointless.

If on the other hand you are not bothered by generally higher latency and higher input lag and insist on better color reproduction and better viewing angles then go for IPS.

https://pcpartpicker.com/part/benq-monitor-xl2720t for FPS games is a good pick.

For IPS can't suggest anything I'm affraid.

$530 but awesome reviews (27", 2560x1440)

Other points:
1) I dislike 27", 1920x1080 monitors as the pixels are too obvious to me. Many others say the same thing.

A game set to 1920x1080 will still look better on a 2560x1440 monitor than compared to a monitor with only 1920x1080 pixels.

2) I game mostly at 1920x1080 as it looks almost the same as 2560x1440 but at about a 30% performance hit (frame rate).

3) I have almost exactly the same system as the OP, and there are lots of games that look much better at 2560x1440 and which you can achieve 60FPS at High or Max quality such as:
- CIV5
- Starcraft 2
- Diablo 3
- Torchlight
- Command and Conquer 3, and Red Alert 3
- Company of Heroes
- Dirt 3
- Dragon Age #1
- most SPACE games
- LFD2
- all LEGO games
- all "fighting" games like Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter
- Prototype (with the fixes)
- Sims 3 (still stutters but that's a game coding issue)
- Dawn of War series (all)
- Bioshock #1

The top-down "GOD" games usually look the best as the small text and HUD elements work much better with the increased pixel count. Bioshock 1 looks almost identical but just slightly better. I generally play at 2560x1440 if I can maintain that at full quality (or near-full) and maintain 60FPS.

4) I'd use DVI and avoid the speakers if possible. Sound probably comparable to $30 speakers at best.

5) I use Adaptive VSync for most games as well (force per game in NVidia Control Panel).

6) **My favorite non-gaming thing is to have two separate programs, one dragged to LEFT and one dragged to the RIGHT and the high-res screen really helps here. I use two Windows Explorer screens quite a bit.

Replying in the same order:

The Asus PB278Q is even less than you said :D: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009C3M7H0/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&me=&seller=

1) Yes, I was looking to get a 27" for 1440p, sorry should have said that

2) If it looks almost the same then do you think I should save some money and go with a good 24" ips at 1080p?

3) I play none of the games listed so again should I just go for a 1080p monitor?

4) I realize the speakers are bad I just like to have them so if I watch a youtube video or something I don't have to wear my headset as I don't have a speaker system.

Also I know that TN panels are better for gaming because of response time, etc. but I don't really notice that much so I like to have really good color reproduction.

Oh and here is a Korean model that gets excellent reviews and is overclockable to 120hz+ like mouldread said:

Oh also if 120hz keeps a monitor from having a better picture quality I have no problem using a 60hz which mouldread said a lot of IPS panels don't have 120hz anyways.

Should I go with that or get a 24" 1080p IPS, PLS, etc.? If I go with a 1080p one can you recommend a good one for $500 or less? Thanks!

To be honest if you have any store/showroom nearby where you can go and look at a few models you will decide for yourself much easier than with people giving you difference advise. Even if you don't find a model you like you will at least know what you don't like and start from there.
