My desktop will not do anything at all when I hit the power button. I did not change anything, in fact I think it was left on and died while I was away.

I was hoping someone could give me a starting point to figuring out what to do/fix. I know VERY little about all of this, so in my mind it could be anything.

My first guess is power supply maybe (only because it is not even attempting to turn on or do anything at all).

Any suggestions greatly appreciated, but PLEASE explain it like I'm an idiot. I've done simple stuff like install new HD or change my video card, but that's it.

Well, if you want to test it, you need to begin by unplugging everything. After that's done, press the power button to discharge any charged capacitors in the power supply. Make sure that you're grounded by grabbing the sides of the case before doing anything internally, so that you don't risk damaging anything. Then, plug the power back in and try it out. If that doesn't work, you may need to replace your power supply. It's likely that you'll have to do this no matter what, but, depending on the severity of the short-out, you may end up having to replace other fragile components like your motherboard and/or CPU.
Step one is to unplug the power supply from the wall, let it sit a minute, plug it in again and then try again.

Step 2 is to test the power supply which is surprisingly easy, unplug it from everything in the PC, turn off the power supply's power button and take a paper clip and short the green and black connectors. Now turn on the power supply. The fan should start spinning. If not the power supply is dead. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4askospjx0E

Wow, thanks so much guys. I feel like an idiot that it was this easy. Just unplugged everything and did the discharge thing and plugged it all in and it worked!

Flux, you mentioned probably needing to replace the PS anyway. Would that basically be a precautionary thing since it seems to work now?

Thanks again!!

Well, since it seems to be working, I wouldn't go out and buy another one. I would, however, get a surge protector or something so that you don't risk overloading your pc's components and end up having to replace more expensive parts. If it happens again, however, I would consider picking up a new one.
