What is Vram used for?

So, I'm deciding between Vram variants on a gtx 770, and I don't know what to get. All I know is that vram is used for holding textures temporarily, but is it used for anything else? Are there any other benefits to getting a 4GB model vs a 2GB model?

Solution
You don't need more than 1GB of VRAM if you're playing at maxed settings, any unmodded game. If you're going to play Skyrim maxed out with all mods possible then you would have to use 2GB of VRAM. You will also need more than 1GB VRAM if you're playing at higher resolutions than 1080p.

It depends on the resolution you're playing with and how good the textures are in the game.

Explanation for how video RAM or memory are used:

Video memory is a term generally used in computers to describe some form of writable memory, usually RAM, dedicated to the purpose of holding the information necessary for a graphics card to drive a display device. In modern 3D graphics cards, the video memory may also hold 3D vector data, textures, backbuffers, overlays and GPU programs, and sometimes takes the form of a Shared Memory Architecture (SMA).
