Installed new motherboard and cpu and now windows won't boot.

Hello, i just installed a new motherboard (Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3) and a new CPU (amd fx 8350) when i go to startup it gives me the option to choose startup repair (which says it fixed the problem but doesn't) or to start windows normally. When windows is starting up a blue screen flashes for a split second (not long enough to read it) and it restarts.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated

oh wait I know what it is, its a conflict with your old install and the new one. you have the old drivers from your old motherboard on the hard drive still. What you need to do is re-install the operating system and download the correct drivers for your new motherboard

can you give me some kind of guide? i've been trying to run the windows disc and in the "repair your computer" option i get this error: "This version of System Recovery Options is not compatible with the version of windows you are trying to repair. Try using a recovery disc that is compatible with this version of windows."

Well was the os that you had on your old pc 32 or 64 bit along with home premium, pro,ultimate? also what os is the disk? they both need to match perfectly in order for that to work

yes, i believe they do match because that disc is what was used to originally install windows 2 years ago.

Is it a dell windows 7 disc by an chance? like did it come with your pc?

No, the pc was custom built by a company who is now no longer around. Its windows 7 home premium.

Are you able to just run a clean install and not the recovery? normally for the best results you want to do a fresh install after a motherboard swap

I tried that, when i click on the drive i want to install windows to i get this error: "Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, windows can only be instaled to GPT disks.
(this is the disk i previously ran windows off of.)

Ah I had that issue before myself. all that you need to do is burn an iso to a usb or a disk. download the iso here http://gparted.org/livecd.php
after that the best tutorial that I could find is this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4LigMbTSlhQ it really isn't that hard. all this will do is convert your mbr to gpt and you should be good to go for the install

hello, sorry i've not responded in so long (i fell asleep). I can't follow thaqt tutorial because it seems the person who built it already partitioned the hard drive so i can't change it to gpt unless i delete all the files. I believe my best bet is to go out and buy a cheap 100gb ssd or something and just install windows onto that.

Well if you want to go right ahead. but for the most part yeah you can't 100% change to gpt without data loss. Just when you buy the new ssd don't have the hard drive hooked up while writing the os to the ssd. I noticed windows will do something stupid and boot the boot sector on one drive and then put the os on the ssd which isn't completely bad, but it can cause your system to boot slightly slower.

Hello, i managed to get things working by deleting the old partition i used to store windows and my core programs on and i created another and i was able to install windows with no more problems! I thank you a TON, people like you are the reason this site is so awesome and helpful! So, THANK YOU.

yeah I had to use that for mine also when I bought a new motherboard. it is one of my most favorite things from open source. If you burnt it to a disk keep it in a good place for the future.

Hello,

I just wanted to post a solution that worked for me as it was really a quick fix. I started doing dism solution from all the threads and then accidentaly red a solution that would save my life. I just changed BIOS storage settings from AHCI to IDE.This way i could load up Windows and install my new mobo drivers.
