I am currently using a wireless adapter for my PC but my download speeds are absolutely atrocious. Wired isnt an option for me as my PC is upstairs and my router is downstairs. I've heard a bit about powerline (or power over ethernet?) but I don't really know anything about it. Is it significantly better than wireless? Has anyone got any first-hand experience with it? Would it be sufficient for gaming?

powerline and power over ethernet are completely different things. In general powerline provides a much more stable connection than wireless. It is less susceptible to interference which is the main cause of issues with wireless connections. You will get nowhere near the 500m speeds or whatever they claim..maybe 80m at the best. It is generally faster than most people internet connection.

For games speed does not matter so much it is the quality of the data. Powerline tends to be better for gaming. For stuff like file transfer wireless tends to be faster because file transfer can tolerate delays and errors much better and the overall speed of wireless tends to be faster. It really depends if your wireless issues are due to...

It really depends if your wireless issues are due to low signal level or interference. If the issue is low signal levels then powerline will likely be faster for even file transfers.

All that said powerline is also radio signals just sent over the electrical wires in your house. There are some houses it refuses to work in so try to buy from someone you can return the product if it does not happen to work in your house. Lucky it works in most houses you just have to be sure to plug directly into the wall sockets avoiding any power strips or extension cords.

So would you say that powerline is the way to go then for my situation? Didnt realise power over ethernet was different, would that be a good option aswell?

You can only try it and see unfortunately. Difference in houses make it to hard to even guess how good certain technology will work.

The only one I can be sure of is ethernet cable which you said you can't use. Power over ethernet literally means that. If you can't run ethernet then you can't provide power to a device which is not what you want anyway.
