I am working on a friend of mines old Dell OptiPlex 280 Pentium 4 with XP professional on it. I determined the mother board was fried from reading some other forums. (capacitors were busted) I bought another Dell OptiPlex off of Ebay running XP home and was going to just switch some of the compters components. I don't know if I've screwed myself up or what. I've tried adding RAM and different hard drives. I can't get the new hard drive to boot at all now, I can get the hard drive from the old dell to boot, but the keyboard will not let me hit CTRL-ALT-DELETE to log into Windows XP Pro. I'm kind of at a lost for what to do? I thought if I put the memory from the old computer into the new with the old memory and hard drive it would allow me to just start the system up. I guessed wrong. I can only get it to boot and lock me at the login screen. Where am I going wrong? I would appreciate any knowledge in this area please. Just trying to get this to him so he can do his tax stuff. Thanks,db

I have switched the hard drives. It's still not letting me into the old hard drive. I have switched the RAM if I try to boot off of new hard drive it says no system found? I will try the PS/2 option and let you know if it works. I'm baffled by being locked out of the OS will the system automatically adjust for adding and removing RAM?
