Hello,

I'm having quite anoying FPS drops while playing games. My FPS is at 60-90 and then drops down to 10ish for 1 to 3 seconds then goes back to normal.
My laptop is an Asus N550JV with a GT 750M, Core i7 4700, 16GB.

Here is the afterburner monitor screenshot :

The CPUs dont seem to be in trouble.
The energy management is on high perf and the laptop is plugged.

Do you think it's bottlenecked and what do you think could cause this?

Thank you in advance.

your cpu won't bottleneck anything.
It might be a temperature issue.
Check your CPU temps during load, see how they are.

It's your GPU temp. Right at the spike in GPU temp your performance plummets. For the couple of seconds it does, the temperature gets back under control and performance rises again. This is the problem with laptops. You may try slightly underclocking the GPU. It looks like a couple % underclock will be enough.

When throttling will the GPU clock down to minimum and drop usage to nothing?

edit: nevermind i'm silly i was looking at the alt tabbed part.
You are right.

I'm not overly familiar with how the mobile GPUs run, but it makes sense in a mobile format with such limited cooling. The sudden drop in clock and memory rate has immediate effect on temperature. You can see this during something like Furmark. My 760 will sit at about 75 or so, but the second I exit it drops almost immediately back to idle temps. This makes a lot of sense for a laptop chip, as it's a quick way to get temps back to acceptable levels.

A good way to prevent this from happening is to clean the heatsink with an airspray to the air intake(while pc is off), also see if you can increase fan speed with your MSI afterburner.-not quite sure how different afterburner's control will be on a laptop's gpu.

Maximum temperature I get on a core is 79°, maximum temp on the GPU is maximum 76°. Might the Max temperature security be set too low somewhere?

Thanks, I will check all these possibilities :)

You can download MSI Afterburner and set your temperature targets higher, but I don't know if that's a good idea with a laptop. You're welcome to try, but I carry no responsibility on the outcome ;)  lol

Your CPU is also kind of high as well, but that's because it's a laptop.

When I run a graphic benchmark, the GPU goes up to 78 degrees and 99% usage and there is no dps, usage or clock drop :/

Try running that benchmark while running Prime95 on the CPU. GPU benchmark utilities generally don't make much use of the CPU, which would keep everything a bit cooler. It may be the motherboard components are getting too hot as opposed to just the GPU or just the CPU. Try running the GPU benchmark, Prime 95, and have Piriform Speccy open on top so you can watch the temps of everything.

Thank you, I tried with Prime95 + GPU test but I dont get to reproduce the same conditions than in game and nothing seems to overheat. I'll try and clean the heatsink and if it doesnt work I'll accept the idea that my laptop is just not opti for games :p  I'll keep this thread updated if I find a solution :)
