Router that can handle sending a signal through kitchen appliances?

Hello everyone,

So my roommate and I recently purchased AT&T U-verse and received a 2wire router from them. Sadly we have the 18Mbps plan but I only receive 2Mbps on a good day. The problem is that the router is in my roommates room across the apartment with the kitchen in between, which the AT&T tech guy we had come out said is affecting it. We cannot relocate it as there are no phone jacks in the living area.

So my question is, are there any routers out there that I could connect to the 2wire one that could send the signal better that way I don't lose 16Mbps going through kitchen appliances?

Thanks for any help!

First, is the speeds normal in the same room at the router? Make sure you test wireless not just the wired connection.

Going across one room should not change things unless you have lead paint or something like solid brick walls.

Unless your kitchen is stacked floor to ceiling full with stuff, just because you have a fridge and an oven there, won't affect anything. If you have a fridge directly in front of where the router is, maybe then.

You can get a wifi extender to place where the signal is strong to re-transmit it, or use powerline networking in the house to extend the wifi signal (powerline ethernet, then a wifi extender connected to it on the other side.

Did you check exactly where the signal goes bad? You can use a program like inSSIDer or Wireless Wizard to chart and monitor your signal. I know inSSIDer you can run on a smartphone as well as a PC.

The internet is fine in the room with the router. The kitchen is directly in the path between the two rooms and is really small with all appliances (oven, refrigerator, washer/dryer, microwave, and dishwasher) all either right next to each other or within 3-4 feet. I have tried an extender but to no avail.
