I'm interested in building a new office desktop w/ a 95 watt cpu since XP is biting the dust.
I'm trying to decide between an AMD FX-8300 or the new AMD A-10-7850.
I like the idea of the 95w designs vs. the 125w or 220w high end FX series.
I'm bundling it w/ a Gigabyte [strike]GA-F2A88x-UD4[/strike] mobo now GA-F2A88X-UP4
My primary usage is internet, dvd burning, Photoshop and office work.
Which processor would be the better choice since I do no gaming.
I also am using Win 7 Pro 64 bit OS and need a CPU that supports virualization which the A-10 does.

Also, my present desktop is 8 years old w/ an AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ w/ 8 GB DDR 400 RAM
and a Gigabyte GV-NXT57128 graphics card. My OS is XP.
My Photoshop activity is not real instense.

whats your budgt?
well, photoshop? what are you doing? very intensive and often rendering and such? or just light tasks?

I ask as video rendering is a very taxing process, even more so than gaming.

Biggest thing here tho, is the fx 8300 beats the a10 hands down 10 ways to sunday, but doesn't offer on board graphics, you have to buy a graphics card. But you can pick something cheap $20 and just use for display, or you can gt something all the way to $1000's and use it to render and get significant performance boost. But either way the 8300 needs one. the a10 comes with built in graphics, but the graphics aren't top notch nor is the processor strong.

If its going to be frequent, hard core editing get the fx and depending on budget gt the best graphcis card you can afford
If its just light stuff, get the a10. You can do light gaming on it, and it is cheaper, includes graphics. Just make sure you get good high speed ram like 1866 or 2100, as it makes a huge difference over 1600 with apu's like the a10

I'll add a note, if it is light unoften tasks, the a10 7850 is a great little processor. But if your building? which im not sure? intel i3 with haswell should be very similar price to the a10 and is a stronger cpu than the a10. Not by as much as the fx, but it will indeed give better photoshop performance.

"Which processor would be the better choice since I do no gaming."
Why specifically the A10-7850K? What about the AMD A10-7700K ($150). You wil be paying premium for the A10-7850 for a slight clock boost and better graphics performance. When I say "better gaphics performance" I mean for gaming. Most, if not all, lower models of APUs can do 1080p video playback. Unless you can get the A10-7850K cheap.

The 7850 is brand new technology, the 7700 is an updated 6000 series. The 7850 allows for more instruction formats, which might not be used now, but easily could in the future. Shrunken die size, more gpu cores and faster. Better use of main ram memory, which is why the cpu is faster and gpu is better. It being faster cpu wise not a huge step, but its quicker and faster since data travels less distance, also reduced heat. As far as graphics, for editing gpu enhancement is huge boost. And im guessing like a $20 chip difference. Plus the new motherboards that are compatable with the 7850 are feature rich, fresh refresh.

I'd say, skimp on the 8300, but don't skimp lower than the 7850, especially if your already talked yourself into comparing the above two.

Do you have a website link that says that the 7700K is an update to the 6000 series? I'm looking on CPU World and both the 7850K and the 7700K support the same instruction sets. The main difference between them is the GPU cores for graphics acceleration and gaming. Not enough use for the HSA right now to suggest the 7850K over the 7700K IMO.

7850K: http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Bulldozer/AMD-A10-Series%20A10-7850K.html
7700K: http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Bulldozer/AMD-A10-Series%20A10-7700K.html

Look at the benches comparing the 7700K to the 7850K.

The 7850 is available locally for $150.
Now I'm concerned about the mobo BIOS version.
If it's not version F5c the chip won't post and the only fix is put in a 6800 chip and flash the BIOS.
Can't say I'd buy 2 cpu chips.

If the board comes from a fast moving reseller most likely it has compatible BIOS since all boards shipped from manufacturer after release has but I understand the concern and it has not been that long. I would contact the retailer before buying to make sure.

I contacted the reseller and they could not tell me the board's BIOS version.
They said that I could have them install the CPU and test the board (now GA-F2A88X-UP4 vs UD4 version) for a $20 fee.
I wanted them to do that anyway since I've had problems in the past w/
mobo purchases. I had one that came with faulty BIOS and had to wait until a new chip was shipped from oversees to correct my problem.
Long story short the retailer installed CPU and my RAM posted the board and off I went.
