Can you (or anyone) help me please. I think that installing Plex Media Server has damaged my Windows 8.1 PC.

Until recently I was quite happily using Windows media server to view media from my Lenovo A730 PC to my Panasonic TV in another (Lounge) room.
I then downloaded and installed PLEX media server on my PC.
However, when Plex was installed, I immediately lost the Windows Media Server from my lounge TV, only Plex was visible, which did work OK.
However, I decided I did not like Plex too much as it was OTT.
So I deinstalled it using REVO uninstaller, thinking that WMP would return but it did not.

I have tried everything that Google can provide.

Deinstalled Windows media player, then reinstalled it again.
Made sure WMP has streaming enabled, Left the Home group and rejoined it again. Checked all services are running ( all the likely ones. )
The PC can see the TV but the TV cannot see the PC server.
I KNOW the network is OK because I have another old PC running XP Home, which I can conect to the network in lieu of my windows 8.1 PC and the TV sees the WMP just fine.

I am using Servio now, but would still like to understand what Plex has done to my machine.

Oh yes, one more thing, I took the precaution of cretaing a restore point before installing Plex, then did a restore after its deinstallation.
So, my guess is that Plex has deleted something vital to the system.

Any suggestions gratefully received before I resort to a "Refresh", which I do not want to do particularly for obvious reasons.

Hi Megax144
Thanks your reply.
How do I check that DLNA has not become disabled?
I have reset the firewall and by turning it off for private networks it will still not see Windows Media server. It sees Serviio OK and also my DMR BS880 panasonic bluray server. I am sure that a dll file is corrupted somewhere but how to find out which and replace/restore it is another matter.

Look at your media sharing options, it should have a list of available devices to choose from. Make sure that your TV is on and is listed there with the "Allowed" box checked.

Hi Megax144
Thanks your reply again,

Yes, They are all showing and are "allowed". I have disabled Windows media server and then re enabled it, which, I am told effectively re installs it.
Still no luck.

I am fairly certain that it is a problem either with the system or Media player software because even if I switch the windows firewall off ( private ) the Tv still cannot see the server.

Closing down for the night now, perhaps chat tomorrow.

Hi Megax144

Just thought I would let you know, that I think I know what is happening.
I was expecting to be able to run more than one media server at a time and use whichever I prefer.
This was based on a previous experience running windows XP and I installed Twonky. I could see both Twonky and WMP servers on my Panasonic TV.

However, I think that both the Plex, and Serviio servers actually lay themselves "on top of" Windows media server.
My reasoning behind this is that when I click the Serviio icon in the Library, it starts Windows media player, so the Serviio Icon is only a shortcut to the WMP.

I also think that both the Plex, and Serviio servers actually hijack some of the ports, which is why WMP does not work again, even with both Serviio and Plex deinstalled.

So, although Serviio it is still a bit OTT compared to WMP, it is working fine, so I am going to leave it alone now as I have wasted about a week on this.

Unless anyone knows different, that is.

Best regards.
