Hi, I have an intel core i5 750 and it is getting too old and bottlenecking the gpu (gtx 770) so I want to buy a new CPU, so what I should buy, a i5 4670k or a i7 4770k (or something different)?

I want to upgrade the gtx 770 in about 2 years, so I want a processor that don't bottleneck something like an hypothetical gtx 980.

I use the computer for basically for gaming.

The i5-4670k would be the ideal choice, but why not stick it out with what you have for another year at least? And if you're looking to "upgrade" to a 770 in 2 years... that's a long time in tech years and while the 770 is a good card, the newer series would likely blow it outof the water.

Basically, if you're looking to upgrade in 2 years, you should be looking to upgrade to current tech, not 2 generations old tech. Same goes for the processor. DDR4 is around the corner as well, so there's a lot you could be getting if you can just be satisified with your current rig.

Generally they perform similarly in most games.

The 4770K is starting to edge ahead in games that use more than 4 cores and allow use of its extra 4 hyperthreads. Even so, the difference is surprisingly small.

http://hardwarepal.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/BF-4-1920-x-1080-Ultra-settings-GTX-770-vs-7970.jpg There's a benchmark with the 4670K, 4770K and GTX 770 in BF4 multiplayer (that uses 8 threads). As you can see it's pretty similar.

I'd expect the 4770K to maybe be relevant for a year over the 4670K when they start showing their age if multithreading takes off. Both are at the top of the game.

In either case, you'd need a new LGA 1150 motherboard so factor that into the cost.

i5-4670k for a gaming focused rig. If you're into doing some video rendering/etc like I've been playing with, then the i7-4770k would be the one to go to. Occasionally I regret that I didn't.

You can actually find i7-4770k's for around 260.00 if you live near a microcenter. That's where I purchased mine, if you're just going to game and don't plan on doing any rendering or multitasking stick with the i5 in my opinion.
