Right now I have
Asus M2N-SLI Motherboard
Socket AM2+/AM2
w/ AMD Athlon 64x2 Dual Core 5800+ 3.02GHz CPU
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti video card
6GB RAM

It's a few years old but I was hoping to be able to upgrade the components (CPU and/or GPU) to be able to play some newer games (Diablo 3, StarCraft 2, Guild Wars 2, etc.) within reason. The cheaper the better but not to sacrifice too much in performance.

More about : cpu put asus m2n sli am2 am2 socket motherboard

You might find a used AM3 CPU like a 955BE that will run on that board, but check the QVL and make sure its TDP isn't too high.
MMOs like GW2 need a strong CPU, so I'm not sure how much you'll be able to improve that. A stronger graphics card will help too. A GTX750Ti or R9 270 would be nice upgrades. They might be bottlenecked a little, but you'll be able to re-use them if/when you build a new rig.

Edit: Hmmm, the Phenom II X3 740BE is there, but not the X4...
Looks like there's a 95W limit.

The "Phenom X4 9850 " is in that list and is a 125watt tdp cpu.
