For example, if it says "up to" 500 mbps, how much should you really expect for minimum throughput?

Hi,

Depending on the brand and the model don't expect more that 250-300 mbps. Most people that reviewed powerline networking say they are disappointed.

I used to have a older powerline network adapter with a slower rating. If it was in the same room on the same wire circuit, it was as fast as the wired network for internet. Once I moved it to another circuit it slowed considerably. Moving it upstairs must have crossed it over to the other branch in the house wiring and internet slowed to a near crawl.

So the answer to your question, it will never be close to the nominal speed, it may be acceptable or it may be much much worse. Buy them from a place with a good return policy.
