Hi, everyone! I hope someone can help me figure out this one. Thanks!

The Problem

Every now and then my computer slows down to a crawl, about twice a day. This can happen anywhere between several hours of operation and a few seconds after startup. What seemed to be a complete freeze at first, turned out to be a veeeeeeery slow mouse (updating its position about every 10 seconds). On several occasions I've managed to move the mouse to a secondary screen, where it moved fine. Moving it back to the main screen slowed it down again. I get a blue screen after several minutes.

My System

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate
CPU: Intel Core i7-920 Bloomfield 2.66GHz LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Processor BX80601920

Screens:

  • ■Dell 1908FP-BLK
    ■Dell S2409W
    ■Wacom Cintiq 21X
All drivers are up to date (as far as I'm aware of).

What I've Tried So Far

  • ■Examined the minidump files (not every freeze creates one). No idea what I'm looking for. Various .exe are blamed.
■Ran memtest86+ for 32 hours. It finished 11 passes without detecting any errors.
    ■Reinstalled Windows. No luck.

A History of Blue Screens

Not sure if this is of any importance, but I had some issues with Vista before.

  • ■I built the computer in April 2009. Originally I had Windows Vista Ultimate installed.
■Sometime 2011 I kept getting blue screens quite frequently. Running the computer in safe mode fixed the problem, so I assumed it might be a driver. I updated all my drivers, but with no luck. ■Reinstalling Windows seemed to fix it, but after a short while the blue screens kept happening again.
■In July 2011 I upgraded to Windows 7 (clean install). This fixed the issue for a while.
■In May 2012, the computer crashed constantly. A system restore fixed this for a month. Then the blue screens returned, though way less frequently.
■In August 2012 the crashes became more frequent again, so I did a clean Windows install, including a hard drive format of my C drive.
■All went well until in November 2013, the computer started freezing. This is different from the previous blue screens.
■In January 2014 I reinstalled Windows 7. No luck. The freezings occur just as often.

Solution
Maybe a bad video card. Or maybe a bad slot in the board? Try card 1 in each of the slots. If crashing persists... test the other card in slot A for a while, then B... Anything?

Any firmware notes online for cards and/or board post 2011 that address related issue?

Does running in safe mode always fix the issues? If you enable it with neworking and use for a while.. are there issues? Though, because it works in safe mode but not regular doesn't necessarily rule out hardware I'd think. What's not to say the using the cards with drivers isn't merely magnyfying the hardware problem, to the 'crash' breaking point, in a way not achievable just running them in basic general safe mode?

PSU though- Do you think it could be a power issue...

My 2 cents.

Success :)

I detached the smaller monitro hooked up the widescreen one and the Cintiq to a single graphics card. Kept freezing. So I hooked them up the the other graphics card. It's been over a month now and I haven't had any freezes any more!

Thank you so much!!

That did it :) One of my video cards must be defective.
