AMD Radeon HD 6800 fan not working

I have an AMD Radeon HD 6800 Series graphics card. The fan is no longer working correctly. It spins for about 1 second, then "rumbles" and runs very slowly for about 5~10 seconds, then stops for about 1 second, then starts all over again.
Running GPU-Z shows the fan speed % as though it is working correctly, but the Fan Speed RPM shows --. The GPU temp just keeps going up to 100 degrees C and then the PC shuts down.

This is what I have tried so far:
I have blown out the dust using an air compressor.
I have removed the card, cleaned the contacts and re-installed it.
I have attempted to use AfterBurner to set the fan speed but that just overrides the calculated speed %, which doesn't actually make it work.

I'm hoping that either there is a simple fix or I can replace the fan. I'd prefer not to have to buy a whole new graphics card.

The fan bearings are gone in the fan. Can you post a link to the exact card you have?

Depending on the card, you maybe able to order a replacement fan or heatsink for your card.

The card is a XFX (AMD) Radeon HD 6800 Model HD-685X-ZCFC

I was concerned with the way that it was cycling that it was more of a software / firmware problem and that replacing the fan might not actually fix the problem.

I have read in various places on the net of other people describing the exact same symptoms. No one has posted a solution though that I have found.

I ordered it on 15 May 2012.
It was manufactured by XFX. I have contacted XFX to see if it is still under warranty but haven't heard back from them yet. I don't hold high hopes, though. But it would be nice if it had a 3 year warranty. Of course I don't still have the box / doco.

XFX used to have a epic warranty but now days if you break any of the paper tags you are screwed. The fans are easy to fix and replace but board level issues are not easy, to fix fans that develop issues with the barring all it takes is some oil and the fan can keep on working for years. Tinkering around with vintage hardware going back to the early 90s with a little far back as the 80s takes some imagination.

The noise it's making tells me the bearings are gone.

Not sure that the fan actually had bearings, I had to destroy the fan to pull it apart, and anyway I couldn't see any bearings. There was no way to get oil into the fan without pulling it apart, and no way to pull it apart without breaking it.

Anyway, I bought a new fan on ebay, installed it and it all works like a charm now.

Just one little point to note, I had to open the case to get to where the fan is plugged into the board, and because the heatsink and fan is connected to the case cover, removing it separated the heatsink from the GPU chip. So to reinstall it I had to clean off the old thermal paste and apply new paste. Not a problem, but just something to be aware of if anyone else has the same problem with their HD 6800.
