Extremely inconstant ping during games

Whenever i play games my Ping in games are always raising above 150+ for a couple of minutes then drops down to a average 30ish Ping for another 20 then shoots back up.

When i speed test i get this :

Wired, or wireless? Any other traffic on the network? Have you tested with only one machine connected?

Also, your ping depends on all the equipment between you and the server you are playing on... do you know what equipment it's going through or the address of the server you are connecting to? If so you can try a trace route to see where the delays are, but most things won't return data anyway these days.

You know how the internet works right? When you type in something like google.com in to a browser it's not like your computer connects directly to the Google server and then it gives you data back. It goes through all the equipment between you and them. For instance if I drop to a command prompt and type "tracert google.com" it returns 11 items that the traffic is going through.

If you do the same thing with the IP or name of the server you are playing on and you are getting 100+ms pings at the time, yet the first hop or two that you see are in the 5ms or less range then all of your equipment is working fine and the problem probably exists somewhere between you and them.

Also, since you don't have a huge amount of upstream speed availabl, make sure no one else (or you) are using anything that would send traffic out of your network while you are playing. For instance, if another user is torrenting and eating up a large amount of upstream bandwidth it can cause some serious problems with latency fluctuations as the data start to pile up.

So this command prompt can be used to test out the ping on almost any server i could connect to? Also does port forwarding the games servers help?

Port forwarding isn't really about performance, it's about a connection. If you are connecting, don't worry about port forwarding.

I'm not sure you are still understanding. It's very likely the issue is NOT with your equipment.

For instance, if you drop to a command prompt and type ipconfig, then find your gateway IP, and then do ping -t <gateway IP> and then play your game. When your lag in the game gets bad, does the ping to your router (gateway) go up drastically too? If not, then the issue likely isn't you.

It's much more likelly that a few people in your area fired up netflix and your ISP is selling stuff it can't supply so it causes traffic delays.

I'll test this later. Networking is the only thing i never understand about Computing. They dont teach it us in college. I'll post up results later. Thank you for putting up with me
