i'm trying to get back into college this year and I had to get a new rig. was rockin a Pentium d for almost 10 years. as much as I want a new console I had to choose an education or a ps4. education is more important.

got a good deal after Christmas at microcenter.

new specs are:
fx-6350
gb 78lmt-usb3 mobo
ballistix 1333 MHz ddr3
1tb hdd
i kept my old 500 watt psu that is still kickin but needs to be replaced due to age.
kept my old Audigy 2 pci sound card.
win7 64-bit if that's relavant

looking a for a gpu around 200 that will give me good performance and will last me 1.5-2 years and give me ps4/xb1 quality or close. also i don't want to get something that will make my cpu into a bottleneck.

i only use a 32 inch lcd tv for my monitor. 1080p is ideal but i'm okay with 720p. would like to get mostly ultra or high settings.

been out of gaming a long time. last console i bought was a wii when it first came out. i have a long list of older games to play.

most modern game i know i want to play is titanfall and if gta v will come to pc then i will pick that up. i know i will pick up far cry, crisis, gta iv, the arkham series and the second risen and i want to try skyrim.

i'm around a month from being able to pull the trigger on a new card and with NVidia coming out with the 800 if i should watch for the 700 series to drop in price or look for a deal on a r9.

I haven't even owned a video card in over 10 years and i only have owned amd (ati then) cards or voodoo. always did consoles mostly.

i thought about looking for a used one but i would rather just go new so i can get the warranty and even an extended warranty. i have always had bad luck with second hand electronics crapping out on me.

i see that i can get a 760 128-bit for around 180 or a 256-bit version that is around 250. between these is there a lot more performance difference?

i7baby - my budget is around 200 for the card since i need to get a new psu.

for a psu i think 650 watts is a bit overkill with my specs honestly. the only other thing i will add is another 1tb hdd. if i stumble on a good deal on a better cooler i would overclock. i've seen also where people run pretty nice cards with far less wattage than what is recommended.

coolcole- that link didn't work. what card were you referring to please.

also i looked and couldn't find anything. is there a list of benchmarks with the fx-6350 and various cards that could give me a bit more insight by chance?

i also don't want to start a war on which is better. would an NVidia tend to run better than an amd on those games i listed in my original post?

Th 500 watt is fine for either of my cards. You don't need a new power supply but if yours is old I recommend this as the replacement.
xfx ts 550w
The 750 ti is a new architecture but a very power conservative one. Also I understand the electronic crap from both ends of selling and buying.

schau - I definitely need a new psu. doesn't have any pcie plug or an 8 pin connector. been getting away with the 4 pin. anything I've really looked seriously so far only needed a 500 watt.

I had looked at the 7870 the most but wondering if going for the newer r9 would be better since it is just newer. never trying an NVidia is also appealing with me. already imo crossing over to the dark side as I only ran intel processors before i got my new rig.

i7- i was looking at a 750 that was 128-bit and not realized it wasn't a 760.
