Hi everybody

I have been having this problem for a while now. I have a HP Pavilion 1240-tx with Windows 7 Ultimate Service Pack 1 (64 bit) and 4gb RAM which I upgraded to 6gb (but the bsod was already there before). I went to a computer shop and a scan showed that what I had was a defected hard disk, so I replaced it. But the error still persists. The error comes up as BUGCODE_USBDRIVER

Event Viewers lists the following errors
An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk1\DR1
The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x000000fe (0x0000000000000008, 0x0000000000000006, 0x0000000000000005, 0xfffffa8009e0ac80). A dump was saved in: C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP. Report Id: 040514-19734-01.

1. Create or set the following registry value:
Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\i8042prt\Parameters
Value: CrashOnCtrlScroll
Type: REG_DWORD
Data: 1

2. Right-Click on the "My Computer" icon on the desktop and select "Properties"; this will open the "System Properties" window. Go to the "Advanced" tab and click "Performance Options". Click "Change" under "Virtual Memory". Set the pagefile to be located on the partition where the OS is installed, and set it to be equal to Physical RAM + 50 MB.

3. Also in the "System Properties" window, click on the "Advanced" tab, then click "Startup and Recovery". Make sure "Complete Memory Dump" is selected (see 3a if this is not in the list). You can change the location of the memory dump file to a different local partition if you do not have enough room on the partition where the OS is installed.

3a. If the "Complete Memory Dump" option in step 4 is not available, you will need to manually set this registry value:

Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\CrashControl
Value: CrashDumpEnabled
Type: REG_DWORD
Value: 1

5. You will need to reboot for these changes to take effect.

6. The next time the box bugchecks, you should now see your server dumping physical memory, then rebooting. When it reboots, it'll create a file called "memory.dmp" -

Forgive me but, what will the reg value do? Will it actually stop the BSOD?

A simple guide for fixing those kind of issues is
http://support.microsoft.com/mats/slow_windows_performance/ just download it and see if it helps

another way
update the chipset drivers for the motherboard from the manufacturer’s website and check if that help

The last resort would be
If the issue persists then, uninstall and reinstall the USB controllers and check if that helps.
a) Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
b) Click System and Maintenance, click System, and then click Device Manager.
Note: If Control Panel is in Classic View, double-click System, and then click Device Manager. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.
c) In Device Manager, double click to expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers", right click on the Host Controller, click "Uninstall" and click "OK".
d) Check if at all there is an exclamation mark along the driver, it suggests issues with the driver installed.
e) Repeat the step 2 to uninstall all items under "Universal Serial Bus controllers".
f) Then, restart your computer and Windows 7 will reinstall all USB controllers automatically.

Nope, no exclamation marks next to anything on device manager. Could it be about some registry errors? And Microsoft FixIt doesn't find the problem either. And this only happens when the ac adapter is not plugged in
