Hi, I got hold of an old computer and was looking to upgrade the processor and RAM before worrying about graphics cards or whatever. I am not doing a complete overhaul, so no new motherboards in the near future.

What I want to know is, what is the best processor I can get? The computer's currently running on a 2.26GHz Pentium 4, which I believe is Socket 478. I am aware that I am restricted to that socket if I want to replace the processor, but what would people recommend replacing it with? I'd prefer a guarantee that it'd work rather than in-theory.

Also do I need to update the BIOS beforehand? I saw a couple of mentions of this around. If so, how?

Thanks!

You need to know the precise motherboard that you have (cpu-z can help here) and then use the manufacturers page to determine what CPUs are compatible.
