Hi, I am considering upgrading my old CPU, but I do not know what specifications to look for.
My motherboard is an Intel_DX58SO, and my CPU is an Intel Core i7 920 @ 2,67Ghz.

I am looking for upgrades that would make my gaming experiences better and smoother.
I don't know if it has to be mentioned, but I have 12 gb Ram, and an AMD rx 290x graphic card.

As mentioned, I am mostly looking for a new processor, but as mentioned, I don't know that much tech stuff, so I don't know if my motherboard should be updated aswell.
Can you help me find a new processor that fits,/ and or a new motherboard & processor that would work?

As said before, you can only really get an upgrade to the first generation Intel i7 series for that motherboard, but you won't really get that much and they will still bottleneck that 290X you have.

It would be better getting an LGA 1155/1150 motherboard and getting an i5 as they would out perform those older i7's and still give the same gaming performance of a modern age i7.

Or if you want to save yourself some pennies, get yourself an AMD FX chip, and a motherboard and it will still give you very nice gaming speeds.

Also gives you a lot of cores for the price if you need multi-threaded CPU's for some tasks.
Cheapest upgrade is if you can overclock with aftermarket cooler, not really much you can do with that board except get a higher number I7 9xx series but really hardly worth it.
Swapping over to lga 1150 and a I7 4770K on a Z87 board if or when you can afford it is a better plan.
