I just witnessed a rather unusual event - I plugged in my Raspberry Pi to my Samsung LE19 19" TV, it switched on and the picture started showing, and white wispy smoke was pouring out the back. I think it made some sort of hissing noise too. I quickly unplugged it, took it outside and waited for the smoke to clear. I then decided to see if it would continue if I plugged it back in, so I plugged it into my outside wall socket. And it is fine! It simply displays the 'No Signal' icon which movies up and down, and it seems to be working with no problem.

What caused the smoke, and is it safe to use again?

Smoke generally is bad. Something burned up
It may work if it were a non-critical component but I would try to get it repaired or replaced.
