To sli or use independent

Hello, kind of got a different question here. When rendering scenes in programs like blender 3d, I noticed in some forums they are suggesting running two video cards as "independent" not as sli. I have an evga gtx 760 4gb card now and was looking at adding a second just for render times (gaming is quite secondary). Now, I have read spec sheet after spec sheet and know it will not double the rendering time but will speed it up quite a bit. A second question would be on monitor hook up, obviously they would be on the latter card but a little confused about that. This is just a hobby (but, in college for graphic design) and I love the building aspect of computers. One last thing, if any one questions whether or not a 760 series card works for adobe photoshop, yes it does, and quite well...

sli is only useful if you are wanting both cards to drive the display of one screen. if you just want to use the power of two cards then providing your software can cope with multiple accelerators then independent is the way to go. If your software can only cope with one accelerator then SLI might work.

Sorry it took a little while to get back with you,. You say one monitor, I am running dual monitor's (benq's) how would running the cards in independent mode effect that? The cards are capable of multi monitor? Sorry to ask such a newbie question, but blender caught me off guard with stating that sli actually slows down the rendering process. I do love the blender program! Perhaps I am misinformed or that it could have been an older post.
