After I play a game for about 10 to 30 minutes, depending on the game, my computer shuts off without warning. The graphics card itself has a small red led that lights up when it shuts off. It went okay for a whole day, playing games aswell, but a day after it just started crashing, sometimes even a minute par between crashes. The screen just freezes and there are just audio patterns going on and on until everything goes black and a reset is needed, and sometimes it just reboots by itself. The Gpu temp is 50 at all times, and 60 when gaming, so I'm certain that it isn't a heat problem. The card requires 500w Psu to run, but a friend told me that a 430w seasonic psu that i have now should be fine, as it is higher quality. I'll try inserting a 500w lower quality psu tomorrow. Thanks for the help!

A "higher quality" PSU won't change much. I'm not sure if he meant what the PSU was rated for (bronze, gold, platinum) but remember that 500w is the MINIMUM requirement. Most here would suggest a 600w to be safe in case you're adding extra components, but if you've just got the basics (HDD, CPU, decent MOBO, and the HD4870) then a 500w won't have these crashes. It's possible that since the 4870 draws 160w, you may, at some specific points, drawn more power than would be provided by your PSU.

To be extra sure, have your friend test a 600w+ power supply in your system, so you don't go out and buy a power supply and it turns out the problem is still there.

Thanks for the reply. I'll insert the 500w psu in a bit and update. I've also heard that this may br related to the cards bios or something called power play which is a card setting I'm guessing.. I'd like to remind everyone that it also crashed a few times while not gaming

Was the 430w PSU you were using an old one? Or was it just a cheaper option as opposed to a 500w? It's possible that it is too old and is starting to fail.

If it's brand new, there is the possibility of the other components drawing too much. (highly unlikely, though, unless you'd have a high TDP AMD processor OC'd) What are your entire specs?

The seasonic is pretty old, but i used it for about 5 months with a GeForce gt220 and it never crashed and nothing abnormal happened. I only have basic components with an extra audio card. The psu is a seasonic 430w s12ll.

I just put the 500w psu in.
It's antec 500w sp-500.
No crashes so far, but I fear I'll get some very soon, since you guys are telling me that it isn't the PSU.
In the mean time, I'd like to figure out if it's the video card. I've read on some forums that a feature called powerplay is causing the crashes, and the only way to disable it is to change the bios, so if you guys could just explain to me what should I do then I'd be very, very grateful.
