4 hours later (and much deliberation) I've managed to come up with a mid-to-high end spec currently sitting at £500. Ideally I'd like Nvidia's setup as I am familiar with it for GPU programming (CUDA). I had to sacrifice that GTX 760 so need help deciding on the back-up monster to select in it's place! Does anyone have any suggestions?

Current plan:

Intel Core i7 4770 3.5GHz Quad Core
Samsung 840 Series 250gB SATA III
Gskillz 2x4gB DDR 2133 RAM
MSI Z87-G45 motherboard
wireless 450Mbps PCI adapter

Any thoughts to PSU requirements

750Ti? Or would that be too much?

what are you using it for? if gaming then lose the i7, get an i5 k series and the gpu that you want. if not then a 750ti would be great if you can find one on an appropriate offer.

Didn't notice the i7 up there and the budget. And yes let us know what kind of gaming you're doing as well. The i5 is worth the ~£60 saved. You can use that money saved on that GTX 760 you wanted.

If it's for gaming, the ram cpu and mobo are overkill, ditch those for lower tiers (i.e. 1600mhz ram, 4670k, asrock z87) and put the money towards a GPU

Thanks for the reply guys. I guess i've missed out some pretty important details. I do pretty heavy duty serial programming on the CPU (eg. MATLAB, Visual Studios etc.), the main reason for the shift from laptop to desktop. Ideally I'd like to play games with moderately high spec for around mid-2012 AAA FPS titles.

Amazon had a GigaByte 750Ti 2gB for £110 if its still there, but I was hoping slightly cheaper. The total budget is around £600. I went for an SLI motherboard so I can use dual cards for Nvidia CUDA development later. Im all ears to CPU and motherboard changes if they fit the requirement :)

In that case, you'd want the RAM and the i7, but your budget makes it a little more difficult to squeeze in a GPU that'll play those AAA titles. You said moderately high spec, though, and if by AAA titles you meant games like COD and BF4 then the 750 Ti would set you right about where you'd wanna be. It seems to me that you're looking at maybe 80% development and 20% gaming, in which case the 750 Ti is ideal.

Thanks man got me spot on. One last question. Would you guys recommend a second hand GPU at all?

If it comes with a warranty, I wouldn't see a problem with getting one around this price. If it's from a friend, at least you've got someone to harass if it fails :D
