I have to connect three laptops to a single modem . the modem is pretty old . it has only one ethernet socket .So i can plug only one cable to the modem at a time .

Is there a way to connect multiple pcs to single modem PHYSICALLY(ie. through wires )

what is router , modem and switch , ? what is difference between them ? because they all look same

BTW,what is a ethernet splitter , wont that work ?

Yeah... you use a router connected to the modem to give yourself wireless access and more ethernet ports.

Or a switch, but since a switch is just a dummy with none of the firewall and security features a router has, you're making it a lot easier for those computers to get infected.

Depending on your mode, a switch may or may not work, if the modem is not designed to handle DHCP, a switch won't work & you will need a router.
Many older modems passed the IP directly to your pC, & as most ISP only assign 1 IP, it's possible your modem & ISP will not recognize more than 1 PC, again it depens on the modem.
