It is really hard to find info on overclocking that card. The GTX has 3GB of VRAM.
You do not really need more then 2GB. Most games to this data can only access 2Gb of VRAM.
The R9 is more money and not better then the GTX 780.
The MHz between the two cards is so close you will not see a difference.
I would pick according to your MOB's support. If your MOB sypports SLI get the GTX 780.
If your MOB is Crossfire get the R9. Only AMD cards can run in Crossfire. For SLI you can only use GeForce cards. (Nvidia)

My mobo supports both sli or crossfire 3 way. Its almost top of the line.

It is really your opinion then. I would get the GTX 780, but it's your decision.

both offer very good performance and the r9-290s have come a long way. it seems that in some benchmarks the 290 is slightly faster than the 780, though the 780 overclocks a little bit better.

sapphire tri-x 290 seems to be the best, but not a big surprise as sapphire is amd's sweet spot.

evga is nvidias sweet spot and this is a comparable card.

msi and gigabyte make nice cards too, but when it comes to evga or sapphire, i believe them to be the best. check out some reviews and look at the benchmarks for the games you play. both have features that you may want like mantle, or gsync, etc. my 780 classified has no problems at 1440p so for everyday gaming on a 1080p monitor, either card will smash through games.
