When I play very demanding games, such as Far Cry 3 and Crysis 3, my PC shuts down without warning and I have to take out and plug back in the AC cable for the PSU before it switches on again. The last temp I remeber looking at before it switched off it was around 83-90 degrees C while the idle temperature is a mere 30 degrees C. When I touched my Graphics cards copper pipes they were searing my skin. Can someone please help me on what's happening and my system also has very good airflow. My system specs are:

GPU-Sapphire Radeon 7870 HD GHz edition (2GB GDDR5)
CPU-FX 4130 3.8GHz (Zambezi)
MOBO-Biostar A960D+
PSU- Ace 500w
RAM-8gb DDR3 1333Mhz

I faced an issue like this but that was due to expired thermal paste on my processor. GPU's normally run very hot. Temps below 85 are normal. Try monitoring temps with CPU-z and gpuz. Post your results then. If it's not this then it might be your psu.

Try another PSU 600w or higher and see if it has the same problem. That card you have may be factory overclocked and draw a little more power than other manufactured cards. A 7870 requires 500w minimum so I can see how the PSU wouldn't be able to afford the GPU's higher demand.

That will mean I'll have to pay around £50 for a new PSU JUST to see if it works.

It might be your PSU but your card's temps are not in the normal range. Temps above 60 and below 80 are normal for full load. Stop any overclocking and then test the card. Check if the fans are not blocked.
