One of my friends, who I built their computer, is having issues where the computer will freeze randomly. We tried to defrag the computer (15% fragmentation on a 1TB drive, she never defrag it, its 4 years old) but the computer will freeze before it can finish (Maybe bad sectors?). It does not BSOD, it just freezes. We updated all the drivers and the bios and it still freezes. I just started doing this, nothing has changed (No new devices or hardware) and no viruses. She is a server manager, she knows how to work with computers but we are both stumped. A system restore to a few months back didn't even fix the problem.

I suspected it is a combination of fragmented HDD/bad sectors and the RAM. When we built it I got her 16GB of ram but one of the sticks was DOA (We didn't send it back because it was cheap RAM). In hindsight, we probably should have sent it back and got better RAM, because this was DDR3 1600 without any heat spreaders so it even looked cheap.

We plan on checking the harddrive for bad sectors later today, but does anyone know of anything we can try before this to fix it?

Nothing is overclocked, the PSU is a 80 plus silver Corsair 1000w PSU, the exact model is unknown at the moment, I will have to ask her later.

Alright, I'll post back as soon as its done

Update:
After running the test overnight, we did get some errors. So we tested all the ram separately and found that the one of the sticks was faulty, after removing it the computer has become stable and we ordered new RAM that is higher quality to replace the current crap Ram she has.
Thanks for the help :)
