I am currently using toshiba canvio basics 1 tb and i am pretty happy with its performance as there has been no issue of data failure, although it was not the case with my seagate one.I think It may be because of its internal shock sensor and ramp loading technology
So the thing is i am planning to buy a new one and now i see there is another hd named "Toshiba Canvio Simple Usb 3.0" which is a lot cheaper cost wise but i am unable to figure out the difference.
Please look at these link:

Hey mate just bought the newer 1TB Canvio Basics to use to upgrade my PS3 and found that the internal hdd is a proprietor hdd and they've removed the SATA connections and hard soldered a USB3.0 port and controller to the HDD.

I assume that's why it cost more and the "newer" Canvio Simple is actually a SATA hdd with a SATA-USB controller attached which would make it cheaper to manufacture I think. I'm in Australia and I was told that our Basics were their newer stock which would coincide with the new proprietor hdd as I've seen overseas vids with the SATA-USB controller in their Basics enclosure and it would seem that they have turned the case upside down, ie opens the otherway than the one I have.

I'm hoping to return Basics/get a Simple (hopefully staff don't check the product lol) and see if it's just a plain old SATA hdd inside. Keep you posted.

Hello Geski, how did you go with your findings? I'm looking at this comparison at the moment. I just missed the $116 2TB Canvio 'Basics' from officeworks (now at $129) and Dicksmith has the the Canvio 'Simple' at $116 too (ending today) and so started Googling the difference. I stumbled onto this thread - I have seen the earlier response which talks differences in 'Software' and yours which is talking about the SATA connection, and so I'm curious now. Thanks mate.
