Is the consensus on desktop touchscreen monitors?

I'm looking to replace my 28" monitor with something new and big. This is for a desktop system running Windows 8.1. The question is whether it's worth getting a touchscreen. On the one hand, I can see some value in touchscreen for the metro interface, but on the other hand it's easy enough to get around with a mouse (mostly in desktop mode), which is what's I've been doing so far. And with a large screen sitting on top of a desk (as opposed to a kiosk, or lying flat on a table), do I really want to stretching my arm all over?

So who had had real world, work-a-day (not gaming) experience with a large touchscreen on the desktop? Is it worth it?

Of course, if I had unlimited budget I could buy one of those $3,000 30" touchscreens and then ignore the touchscreen feature if I didn't like it. In the real world, with a fixed budget, I can choose between bigger, or higher resolution, or touchscreen.

I worked with a touchscreen full PC and found that I was using the good old mouse and keyboard on a regular basis. It was a bit of a hassle to let go of the mouse, touch the screen, and go back and forth like that. If the price is not too much more then the touchscreen is not a bad thing, sometimes its fun to use, but you won't miss it.

The new Windows update is going to allow you to boot directly into the desktop, so the Metro screen is going to be optional.

You can run Windows 8.1 without a touch screen. Sure it helps for Metro but it's definitely not a requirement, and certainly not worth the price as large touch screens above 27" are extremely expensive. Just get a regular 27" monitor and you'll be fine.

It's not a question of whether I can run Win 8.1 without touchscreen. I was already doing that with my old 28" monitor. But since I'm replacing that monitor, I'm looking at whether there is any added value in having a touchscreen.

Actually 27" touchscreens aren't that expensive, but 30" ones are. However, for the price of a 27" touchscreen you can get a larger non-touchscreen. So it comes down to: has any one used and found real value in having a touchscreen on the desktop in a larger monitor?
