Compared to an internal SATA hard drive, yes a USB hard drive will have slower write speed even if it's a USB 3.0 drive on a USB 3.0 port. But with a laptop you don't have much choice anyway, though you could render to the internal hard drive to start with, then leave it to copy over to the external at a convenient time, perhaps when you're away doing something else.
