So, I recently tried to upgrade my PC, with an old AMD athlon x4 360 that (as far as I know) still works. However, when I try to install it into my Compaq CQ5600 I get no display on the monitor. The fan spins, and it powers on but I don't know how to get the PC to boot with the monitor. Is it something I didn't do? Or is the processor damaged? Or something else? And the Compaq works without issue with it's original processor inserted instead of the Athlon X4

You may not be able to. As jimpz says, OEMs are not very good about keeping BIOS updates available for very far into the future... if at all. You can do an online search for the MB BIOS, but even then it would be hit or miss that it would be late enough to recognize the CPU. Or even if the BIOS was from a reputable site. Of course, you could always contact HP/Compaq and see what they say.

If this is your MB (same as HP Presario): http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01701270&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=3970034#N52
...here is a thread I found that seems to correspond to your situation. The post was updated recently, so it may be a late enough BIOS. But I can't vouch for it...

The Athlon X4 is not the same as the Athlon II X4. And your board requires a AM2+ CPU. While the AM3 socket Athlon IIs are backward compatible with AM2+ sockets, they were released much later and probably require a BIOS update for your motherboard's BIOS to recognize it.

HP/compaq have no bios updates for that unit, you would need to look on pegatrons web site & see if they have a bios update for that system (Again Oem's are notorious for not doing bios updates unless there is an actual problem)

Check the BIOS version of the update against the one you have now to see if it is later. But...
Use at your own risk.
