do I need a new CPU?

Hi, I am considering a video upgrade and am wondering how much my CPU/motherboard comes into play. I have a 6 core phenom AMD CPU and Asus matching motherboard both from a 2010 build. Can I find a substantial gain by replacing my ati 5830 era video card with something newer? Or should I just pack it up and realize I need to build a new system? What are the parameters that I need to pay attention to? Thanks.

PCI-E slots do not make a difference. GPUs don't take advantage of newer slots at all. Your CPU was high-end back when it came out and it still runs strong. Some of the newer AMDs are better optimized, but the Phenom will run very close to the newer FX 6 core (I believe its like a 4-10fps difference depending on the game). Anything above 6 cores is fairly useless at this point for gaming.

Eventually you will have to upgrade your CPU/MB, i'd give it 2-3 years. At that point you could switch to Intel if you had the budget, which tends to perform better in games.

You will notice a much bigger difference in gaming through upgrading your GPU.

I should have mentioned what I'm after. Which is directx 11+ performance. My current system is 3.41 gHz with 8 gb of ram at 1600 mHz. My basic goal is to be able to play new games. Beyond that my system is giving me the performance I need (as an HTPC as well). Will my core CPU/Motherboard ever be the bottle-neck? It probably has PCI-E 1.0 as far as the motherboard goes.

The HD 5830 wasn't a great card to begin with. Its price was higher than its performance. I would recommend upgrading to a GTX 770 2GB. The Radeon cards are all inflated now because of the stupid coin miners. I was lucky to get my twin HD 7970s before this happened. The Phenom II X6 is still a decent CPU for gaming and if there's any problems, you can overclock those chips to the moon and that should fix any problems that you have.
