Games cause system crash

I am having a problem with my computer but am not sure which piece of hardware is causing the issue.

The system works very well. I can even play League of legends with no issues. The only issue occurs when playing games as graphicly demanding as say Starcraft 2/Diablo3/World of Warcraft.

The game will run fine for a bit. But after a while (usually 30 minutes to an hour now) the entire system will randomly shut down completely in the middle of the game. Upon starting the system back up, it informs me I have had a BlueScreen error of some sort.

I thought perhaps it was a power issue. Bought a new power supply, no go, still happens. I thought perhaps the card could be overheating, but thats not it either. I used Furmark and the card runs fine at like 80 C. No crashes, nothing. And that is higher than the card gets during the games I mentioned. So I don't think it is the card? I'm not sure.

A friend said that he thinks it must be the motherboard, again not sure. No idea what to do at this point really, save buying a new motherboard/processor or a new graphics card.

But it would be a huge waste of money to buy either one of those just to find out that it didnt solve the problem.

Any suggestions?

download hardware info (hwinfo) http://www.hwinfo.com/ and use this software to monitor the temps on the CPU and motherboard VRM's maybe the north bridge on the motherboard gets to hot or the cpu...have you got anyhting overclocked? If so i'd suggest you reset the bios to default settings and see if it solves the problem...

check for a slow or dust clogged cpu and gpu fan. if the rig is dusty blow it out. with gpu a lot of time the older gpu will get hot because of the newer drivers have bad fan profile for the cards. try using msi afterburner and set fan profile of 100 percent at 50c see if that helps the gpu may be louder but you want keep the gpu under 80c.

use this to see if the system have made any minidump files it will read them in plain text http://www.resplendence.com/whocrashed

Are the downloads on these pages offered in previous comments safe?

I should have also noted that, for the first 6 months or so of use, there was no problem. So you think it has something to do with drivers?

Edit: Also, when the crash happens, the error report saying a "BlueScreen" has occured does not always pop up. Idk if that is relevant or not

Maybe drivers yes, you could re-install some of them after checking that nothing is wrong under device manager of windows yes, it could also be due to a dust build up in the system as mentionned before...

Okay I used it and it analyzed past crashes. It says this:

"13 crash dumps have been found and analyzed. Only 10 are included in this report. A third party driver has been identified to be causing system crashes on your computer. It is strongly suggested that you check for updates for these drivers on their company websites. Click on the links below to search with Google for updates for these drivers:

nvlddmkm.sys (NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver, Version 331.65 , NVIDIA Corporation)"

I'm looking around on google but quite honestly dont know what im doing or looking for. Halp? xD

Edit: Bug description:

"Bug check description: This indicates that an attempt to reset the display driver and recover from a timeout failed.
A third party driver was identified as the probable root cause of this system error. It is suggested you look for an update for the following driver: nvlddmkm.sys (NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver, Version 331.65 , NVIDIA Corporation). "

In case that tells you anything

Downloading the new driver right now. While I wait to test it out, I should note that my graphics card is superclocked.

Could this also be causing the issue? If so, how do I fix it? I have seen many recommendations to lower the clock to factory recommended speed or something with EVGA precision, which I have. But I do not know how to do that with the program. Could you explain to me how? In case the driver does not work

Alright. Updating the driver did not work. Just crashed. I ran the whocrashed thing again. It is the same error. Except now the new driver is listed as the problem. Even on the crashes that occurred with the previous update, before I updated the driver.

Does this mean the graphics card is broken?

Edit: I think I was not clear about what happens before. The computer does not turn off, it stays on. The monitor goes black, and the graphics card fan kicks into 100% speed and stays that way until I power the system off

I tried that as well and the same thing happened. I did clean installs so that removes all the previous drivers I think.

I have not tried to GPU in another system. This is my only computer, dunno where I would go to do that

I took the card to a friends and put it in his system. His computer crashed and rebooted itself, whereas mine simply had the monitor go blank and graphics card fan max out. But I think the problem is the same. I brought his card home with me, it is a Nvidia GT 220.

I ran the games that cause crashes on my 660 for 30 minutes with no issues. So I have to assume at this point the card is the problem. Agreed?

go with the diablo 3 supported card and made your choice https://us.battle.net/support/en/article/diablo-iii-sup... you will be able to play the elder without issue .

I am looking at different cards and the 660 is still the best card for performance/cost for me.

But I am scared to buy another, after having so much difficulty with this one.

Do you think its safe to buy another 660?
