I am running a Compaq Presario SR1750NX with Windows XP Media Center Edition. I had a hacker get into my computer and set the start-up password so I could not get in to my computer. I got around this by clicking on F10 System Recover at start-up. This got me passed the start-up password, but now all my file paths are wrong. For example I have "C\Documents and Settings\ Compaq _Administrator.HUDSON\....". I want to have "C\Documents and Settings\ Compaq _Administrator\....". How do I get rid of the Compaq _Administrator.HUDSON file path and replace it with Compaq _Administrator? Also how do I check that start-up password is not set?

Create a new account to use, and copy the files from the compaq_administrator account. I suggest you create a regular user, not an administrator, account to help prevent virus infections. Only use the admin account if you need to make system changes.

To check for the password is easy, if you're talking about the BIOS password, reboot and see if it's set. If it did not show up again, you are set. If it's a Windows password, since you created a new account, the old password and account are no longer relevant. If you did not fully wipe your system though, you should, as whatever files were on your system that gave the hacker control may...
