Help upgrading mobo from AMD to Intel

Regrettably, budget constraints forced my to go with the cheap AMD FX-4100 and Asrock 970 extreme3 back when I built my system, in December of 2012. These days, I am encountering an annoying lack of performance from my CPU, especially in single-threaded applications (World of Tanks). Thus, I am looking to upgrade my CPU and motherboard as soon as I can.

After extensive research, I know that Intel is the way to go for my purposes, as I am getting into hardware intensive applications such as Blender. But mainly, I play games (primarily World of Tanks, but also games such as BF3, Total War series, and some different modern titles) which I know would really benefit from the increased CPU performance.

I am pretty sure that I have my heart set on either an i5 3570k or i5 4670k, depending on which motherboard socket I go with. However, I am unsure of which motherboard will best meet my needs within my budget. The Asrock Z77 extreme4 has been looking quite attractive to me, due to its low price and good features. The ability to overclock, support SLI/Crossfire, and have good longevity are all imperative. However, I recognize that it is a slightly older board, and there probably won't be any more socket 1155 CPUs coming out. I've been considering going with a socket 1150 board, but I'm not sure if I can find one that would match the reliability and OC ability of the Z77 extreme4. With my birthday coming up in early June, I thought I could ask for the motherboard as my gift, and buy the CPU after a couple months of saving. Obviously I would like to have the motherboard all picked out beforehand, so that I can ask for it ahead of time. Then I can save my money for a future video card upgrade. Ideally, the motherboard would be $130 or less... much more than that, and I probably won't get it. Still, if the performance difference to be had was massive, I suppose a higher price tag could be made to work.

Basically, does anyone know of a socket 1150 motherboard that is the equivalent of the Asrock Z77 extreme4, for about $130? Or should I just stick with the older socket 1155?

Solution
I consider the Fatal1ty the budget board I would buy, the Extreme 4 is a direct lga 1150 replacement for the lga 1155 one. And yes they will handle mild to moderate OC well.

I like the look of the Z87 extreme4, as well as the Fatal1ty Z87... could they both be considered the new and improved versions of the trusty old Asrock Z77 extreme4? I want to keep this system around for a long time, so I will want to do OC eventually.. probably up to 4.2ghz... could these boards handle a 24/7 overclock like that? Thanks for these answers so far!

The more I look at the Fatal1ty, the more I like it! Funny, because it wasn't even on my radar. Thank you, good sir, you have banished my indecision. I think I will go with the Fatal1ty.

Tell me; would you recommend the i5 4670k to me? I know it is every bit as good as most i7s out there for gaming purposes, but I can see myself getting into 3D rendering and animation, etc. Would an i7 be significantly beneficial to me as an upgrade down the road, or would the i5 be able to handle it? Thanks again.

Oh, and also, I've heard that there can be some OS issues when switching CPU and Mobo from AMD to Intel... does anyone know of a guide or the like around here that can help me through the switch when the time comes? I have no idea what exactly will happen, or what to do about it when it does.

Can I do a clean install of the Windows 7 OEM that is already on my system, after the upgrade? I don't want to have to go out and buy another copy of Windows 7 when I still have the disc on hand. I'm just scared of losing the hundreds of GB of data on my system, as well as my OS, by merely swapping out a mobo and CPU.
And I suppose I will stick with the 4670k for the foreseeable future... it will be a massive upgrade over the piece of trash that currently lurks in my system anyway.

Yes you can but most likely you will have to call MS to activate because of the Hardware change. OEM 7 license is for one computer ever but there are multiple example they have let people re activate if asked nice.
All important data should have backups anyway but if you do a clean install you will have to back it up first.

Okay, thanks a lot! You've just cleared up a lot of the big questions I had. Looks like maybe I'll ask for an external hard drive instead of the motherboard, then just buy the CPU and mobo together come next Black Friday or Cyber Monday.
Thanks again.
