Win8 32 bit sees 8 GB RAM (usable 3.5 GB) but 64 bit restarts on 8 GB of RAM. Please help.

Hi,

I have a Dell Dimension 9100. Against all specifications, I went ahead and installed 8 GB of RAM. The BIOS saw it. The 32 bit Windows 8 OS saw it (although only 3.5GB/8GB was usable).

Recently I decided to go with a SSD and put Win8 64 bit on it to make use of the full 8 GB. Installation kept restarting at the Windows logo screen. Finally ran the installation with 4 GB and it worked. The OS even started fine.

But after putting the system back to 8 GB, the computer restarts as soon as the Windows logo screen comes up and I don't understand why. It seems like 8 GB in this system is wishful thinking!

Now, I know I have done things against specs here, but I just can't understand how the 32 bit OS can work with 8 GB of RAM installed but the 64 bit OS restarts. It's counter-intuitive.

Just FYI, the Maximum memory in the Boot Advance options on the 64 bit go up to a maximum of 4096 MB and I have this unchecked. It shows 4 GB installed with 3.50 GB as usable.

I'm thinking if I go with the 32 bit option, then I might use the Physical Address Extension (PAE) patch here: http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/windows-and-office/override-the-4gb-memory-barrier-on-32-bit-windows-81-systems/

Can anyone vouch for this option?

I know this is like digging up old graves. I apologize and sincerely appreciate your feedback.

Thank you.

Gate9er: According to specs, the mobo can only handle 4 GB, but then how come it is still recognizing and running with 8 GB?

My mobo is a i945P Intel chipset with a Pentium D 820 processor (dual-core, Smithfield). ALL specs and literature state that it cannot handle more than 4 GB, but I was under the impression that the computer wouldn't even work if it didn't accept the RAM, but it did.

Well it may recognise the ram though it won't be able to reach that performance. So basically the usable RAM memory will be 4GB in your case. I have read posts which claim that you won't be able to even boot up but you can, so I guess you will simply not be able to operate with 8GB.

Gate9er,

Thanks for all your advice. I guess I'll just stick to the 4 GB of RAM. Maybe put in 5 in case.

I see you're a Gfx Card expert. I know this might be the inappropriate thread, but can you point me to a source which can tell me how I can determine the best RAM, Gfx card and sound card that my system can handle?

Thanks again!
