Last month I had purchased a refurbished Dell Optiplex 745 with Windows 7 32bit pre-installed. I'm currently trying to either upgrade it to Win 7 64bit or Win 8 64bit. I already added additional 4 gigs of RAM (currently running 6 gigs) now I want to upgrade my video card, if its possible what will be my best options?

I had tried contacting Dell but the only thing they kept telling me was that the computer was not compatible with Win 7 & above.

Additional system info:

Operating system: Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit (6.1, Build 7601)
Language: English
System Manufacturer: Dell Inc.
System Model: OptiPlex 745
BIOS: Phoenix ROM BOIS PLUS Version 1.10 2.6.4
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6400 @2.13Hz (2 CPUs), ~2.1GHz
Memory: 6144MB RAM
Page file: 3337MB used, 2783MB available
DirectX Version: DirectX 11

More info on graphics card currently installed:

Name: Intel(R) Q965/Q963 Express Chipset Family
Manufacturer: Intel Corporation
Chip Type: Intel(R) GMA 3000
DAC Type: Internal
Approx. Total Memory: 256 MB
Current Display Mode: 1360 x 768 (32 bit) (60Hz)
Monitor: Generic PnP Monitor

Any info or tips would be great and thanks for your time.

I have a Dell optiplex 745 sff - just bought and installed the following card which I'm pretty sure is the "best" possible upgrade choice...GTX 750Ti - it's low profile, single slot and doesn't require an additional power connector - been using it with original psu no prob. The only caveat is that there were 2 tall capacitors in the way of the heat sink on the card that prevented it from seating all the way into the slot. So I just removed what appears to be a cosmetic bracket over the fan and that gave the card enough room - everything has been working fine since installed. BTW, I grabbed a QX6800 CPU (SLACP) off eBay for cheap and installed that too..."decent" gaming machine now...

What size is your 745? They come in 4 sizes; minitower, desktop, small form, ultra small form.

There are three issues with the size. One is the physical size of the card that will fit; regular or low profile, single or larger slot size. A second is the power supply and how much power is needed. The final concern is if the motherboard has an additional power connector, which the more powerful graphics cards require.

Hi there misahnov, I recently upgraded my Dell Optiplex 745 MT video card with the ASUS GTX650-E-1GD5 GeForce GTX 650 1GB 128-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready Video Card. You just need to cutoff two "inch-sized plastic fins" from the CPUs heatsink housing to be able to insert the card to the PCI slot. My Windows Experience Index on the Gaming graphics component shot up to 7.3. Hope this helps.
