Hi everyone.

I have a ADATA 1TB usb External hard disk. When i plugged it in, i get the message 'You need to format the disk in drive J: before you can use it. Do you want to format it?"

I have loads of photos and videos in it that i abolsutely need and cannot afford losing.

I tried the CHKDSK trick on the command prompt but it fails with the message "unable to determine volume version and state. CHKDSK aborted"

Please help

Hi npriyanth ,
do not format the disk if you want too keep data on it or you will erase everything ,
right click mycomputer /manage then click on disk management on the left hand side , this will show you every HDD you have hooked up to your pc , if you can see your 1tb click on it and go change drive letter and paths , this will asign a new drive letter to the HDD and it should be accessable

Thanks for the quick reply.

I tried it, but management says my external hard disk 100% free. I changed the drive to h:, but it makes no difference. I still get the same old message prompting me to format it.
