So my big desktop computer finally gave up the ghost and stop working. It's probably for the best though, because i don't really have room in my tiny collage apartment from a full tower....

Anyway, I just got a replacement in the form of a used HP pavilion dv6 laptop running 64-bit windows 7, and it happens to have a ESATA port. Handy!

Most of my files were currently trapped on the desktop's old internal hard drives, so I thought why not use the still functioning OCZ 750w power supply to power these drives while I move files back and fourth from my laptop using an ESATA to SATA cable.

I figured out about the the paper clip thing where you can trick the power supply into turning on without being attached to a motherboard. So that's done.

When I attach my Western digital 1 TB "Caviar Green" hard drive the computer will recognize the drive for anywhere between 5 seconds to 5 minutes before i hear the drive lose power and shut itself off.

Then if I wait for long enough the power supply will shut it'self down too... even though its still switched on.

Why doesn't this work as an alternative to getting a separate external hard drive enclosure?

My friend says that the paper clip maneuver is simulating a long press of the power button, and thus the power supply assumes your trying to do a force shutdown. I could understand this but if i remove the paperclip at anytime, the dive loses power anyway and im back to square one.

Any insight?
