Win 8 doesn't recognize my WD Black HDD?

Hello,
I just purchased this HDD (SATAIII) because I wish to clone my old drive. I downloaded Acronis WD edition to perform the operation. When I install the new drive in my LAPTOP HDD bay - as recommended - and the old one via USB as suggested I get a message from my BIOS to install an operating system. The BIOS is set to boot from the USB port first, but nothing happens. When I reverse the position of the drives (new via USB and old back in the HD bay) Windows does not see it. I get a message "Z: refers to a destination that is not recognized" but the drive isn't listed anywhere in explorer. I've contacted both my Motherboard manufacturer (HP),WD, and Windows about the issue, so I figured maybe you guys have seen this problem, and perhaps have a solution. This is the second drive I bought - I returned the first one I purchased last week thinking it might be a bad drive, but this is not the case. Old HDD is SATA. Running Windows 8 64bit, AMD A-6 4400M APU, 8G DDR3. Hope this is the correct forum. If not please refer me to correct one.

Thanks. When it does see it, and I click on the properties I get "ERROR code 45 The device in not connected. Reconnect and try again" It is clearly connected and power is on when I get the message, so I disconnect it and reconnect but get the same thing. Tried updating driver, but windows says it's up-to-date even when I tell it to check the manufacturer.

Funny thing is I connected to my Windows 7 laptop and it was recognized right away. That laptop is at least 2 yrs old...It has a Celeron in it! Yet, no issues at all. I would just upgrade that one, but the Celeron is too weak for my needs. I only get okay results with my A-6 4400.

As a Games Drive, I have the WD 1Tb Black Hard drive on an i7 Haswell PC (SSD Win8.1) and I cloned that onto a WD Black 2Tb Drive; and I have the same problem.

Windows will not recognise either of them now as the "I" Drive which the 1Tb Drive was.
The 2Tb Drive appears to be empty now after 3 hours being cloned to in a cloning machine.

Makes ya wanna scream in Bill Gates lug-hole all kinds of profanities about his genetic source...

Hey there, schugeorge67!

I'd suggest to connect the drive to another computer, just to see if the problem lies in the HDD or some other component of your laptop.
Also can you see the drive in device manager? If you are able to see the HDD there, you can remove/uninstall it and restart your notebook.
You mentioned you get the Error code 45 and the disconnecting/reconnecting do not work, then I'd suggest to try a USB-to-SATA bay. I'd also advice to maybe consider trying to recognize the drive with a USB-to-SATA adapter. Here's an article that will tell you all the benefits of owning such an adapter: http://www.pcworld.com/article/2036718/why-its-a-good-idea-to-own-a-usb-to-sata-adapter.html
Are you sure the MBR got cloned to the new disk? Here's a tutorial on how to repair master boot record that may be helpful: http://www.thewindowsclub.com/repair-master-boot-record-mbr-windows
Instead of cloning you could try imaging your drive. You can use Acronis again to create and then restore the image to the new drive. This actually is the recommended method of cloning because it reduces the risk of accidental data loss.

I'm shooting on sight here! :??: Let me know if any of these helped.
Good luck!
