Hey guys, a simple issue here.

Ive ordered a new CPU cooler that's meant to come tomorrow. When i take the old heatsink off can i just put the new one on, or will i need to apply new thermal paste to the CPU. If so can i just scrape the old paste off apply new paste or do i need to do it in a special way. Or like i said, can i jsut put the new heatsink on?

Solution
You need to clean your CPU's integrated heat spreader from the old thermal paste gunk. Thermal paste dries over time so it becomes unusable again if applied, making reapplication necssary. Simply putting the heatsink back on will make your cooling worse as the heat from the CPU cannot conduct properly to the heatsink.

You need to clean your CPU with tissues/lint-free cloths mildly doused with 70% or more isopropyl alcohol, make sure it's thoroughly clean before you reapply the apste and mount your CPU.

Look at the reviews to know which is best:

The Noctua NT-H1 is great.
I imagine your new heatsink will come with thermal paste already though, they generally have a line already on.
