Not sure if this is in the right thread. I am new to this site so let's give it a go.

My computer seems to be freezing a lot. It is currently unknown why and I have tried a lot of different things. So let me give you some details.

Specs:
12 GB RAM - 8GB Patriot 1600mhz 1.5 voltage - 4GB Ballistix Sport 1600mhz 1.5 voltage

AMD FX - 4170 Quad core 4.2ghz

Nividia Geforce GT 630

Asus M5A78L-M USB3

Windows 8 Enterprise 64 Bit
Current Temps of the computer:
CPU: 45C
GPU: 35C
MB: 34C

Sometimes it seems like it is more prone to freezing when the computer is left idle. Sometimes however it will freeze when the computer is in use. The computer completely locks up and doesn't do anything at all.

I have run memtest on the ram and it came back clean.

I have been into my power options and made sure the hard-drive doesn't power down.

I have no idea what I can do with this so if you have something I can do it will be appreciated if you could help.

Give a antivirus and Malware scan. if that doesn't help, have you installed the windows again? Just backup your data of OS drive and do full wipe of your installed OS drive. Reinstall your OS and required drivers.

Have you done full hdd wipe too? If not just give it a try(lets keep this for the last). Other options are, updating your bios and disable your antivirus for sometime. And what power supply are you using? Are you using any third party software for your drivers update?

When I re-installed window I did a full HDD wipe to be sure, my bios has been updated 2 days ago. My psu is
ScanFX 500W PSU Black ATX with 120mm Quiet Fan here is the link to it ; http://www.scan.co.uk/products/500w-scanfx-psu-all-black-with-120mm-quiet-fan-atx-12v-v20

My drivers are from the asus website.

What hdd are you using? Also, give a check on your power supply supply for once, i doubt it's quality so can be a thing casing you such issues. Next thing would check your pc for latest Microsoft Updates.
Update: Maybe try downgrading your Operating System can be an another point too to give a try. Sometimes computer's specs can be low or not at their best state to run the operating system at a satisfying level.

I think there is something wrong with the MOBO.i have encountered this problem before.my computer freezes at idle and sometimes shut downs too.It freezes mostly when i play a game.I sent it to a shop to repair it.my HDD,RAM,my GFX card was fine.i formatted my HDD too same prob.after a thorough investigation it turned out it was my MOBOs problem.i think it was overheeated

what did you do?
@Aikor: the symptom you have stated are most likely power supply issues in which it can't provide enough current to your pc when you really need it in case of gaming and also causes your pc to freeze often. Not to forget, maybe you could have checked your psu too which may have damaged your motherboard with unregulated current and also you current can be going through same circumstances after some time period. Just get it checked :)

What hard disk are you using? Try swapping your hdd sata cable with optical drive's, just to check. Also, if possible check your system on any other power supply.

Swap it with my disc drive cable or my other hard drive cable?

i would suggest all, but if you have single SATA cable then connect it to main hdd.

when you were installing windows, was there any system reserve partition with other drives showing? If no, then reinstall your windows once again, format os drive > delete the os drive and create a new drive from unallocated space and windows will automatically create system reserved space.

Otherwise, the conclusion leads to one of the item from PSU, Motherboard or HDD isn't in it's good state. Just to be sure, you can check on any other pc.

Welcome to Windows 8. On behalf of the inmates here, enjoy serving your time...

As you may have guessed I'm far from 8's biggest fan. All it's proved to me so far is that it's broken (at least until I can pinpoint what piece of hardware is causing my problems, if any)
