a new WD 750 HD is installed in a Sabrent 2.5-Inch SATA to USB 2.0 External Hard Drive Enclosure (EC-UST25). The plan is to format the drive, clone my laptop 320 gb drive to it and put the new drive in the laptop. Disk manager recognizes the enclosure but says "No media". Is this a failure of the hard drive? I'm not sure the drivers for my laptop are ATA or SATA. How would I tell and would that matter?

Disregarding the "No media" aspect, what do you mean by this - "format the drive, clone my laptop 320 gb drive to it and put the new drive in the laptop"

You want to clone a Windows install onto a 2.5" drive, and then put that in a laptop?
Where is this coming from, and where is it going?

More details please.

My original 320 GB is running out of space on my Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop. I want to install a larger drive. I'm running Windows 7 Professional. I have to get everything from my exiting laptop drive to the new drive and then install the new drive. The simplest way to do this is to clone my existing drive using Clonezilla, free cloning software which will create a clone of my laptop drive on the new drive.

I've solved the no media problem but now I can't get a way to initialize it to create a volume on the new drive, which I must do before I format it. The "create simple volume on Disk Management is grayed out.
