I currently have a gtx 780 s.jetsream, planning to swap it for an r9 290 and i plan to go for a 2 or 3 monitor set up 1920x1080. I know for sure that an r9 290 with good cooling can kill a 780 but at the cost of a bit more voltage. And i also know that a 780 with high clocks can match an r9 290 with less voltage. Which is better for my setup? Please enlighten me my brothers :)

3gb should be alright... i mean you might bottleneck a bit in 4k, but i doubt it would be significant... and 3 1080p monitors in 5760x1080 resolution is a bit smaller then 4k.
yeah... the r9-290 is basically equal with a 780. Maybe a little faster and closer to the original titan, but for all intents and purposes it's basically identical.

The only step up you'd notice from that 780 is a 2nd 780... for SLi.. as the jump to a 780ti isn't really significant enough to warrant the money either.

1. If i go for sli? Will it be okay if the second 780 has a big gap on core clock freqs than the other?
2. How much wattage of a psu should i get? I only have 620watts atm. The 780s draw around 300w+ at high loads.
3. is it really true that an r9 290 tri x draws about 275w at high loads? I saw it on versus.com

3 monitors are best, otherwise with 2 you get a split down the middle which spoils it.

BTW, how can you do both AutoCAD on one screen and gaming on the other 2 screens at the same time? Wouldn't it be best to game on 3 screens, then when you had the urge to do auto cad during gaming, simply ALT-TAB to autocad on 3 screens?

Although the performance of the R9-290 is very similar to the GTX 780, 4GB Vram may be useful in the future. BF4 is already using 2.7GB on 3 monitors and Titanfall fills what ever you've got, despite the crap graphics. This trend could continue.

Im not so sure myself on how? :) Sir since your on 290 tri x, can you tell me the power draw based on your usage? I have someone who wants to straight swap his 290 tri x to my 780. Should i ask him to add a few bucks? (My gpu is 6monhs old, his card is 1month). Im really considering that extra vram. And yeah it may continue :)

The 290 in the US has been more expensive than the 780 due to the crypto mining, but is dropping now. Here in Oz, the 290 is a bit cheaper.

As for power, when running firestrike at stock GPU clocks with an I5-3570k @ 4.4GHz, my PC took 360W from the plug. GPU-z reported the GPU was taking 238W.

At 1200MHz core clock on the GPU (+200mV), my system was taking 460W, so another 100W for the GPU, which is quite high, so I only run a 1000MHz core, which is nice and cool and quiet for gaming on 3 monitors. The Tri-x cooler is very good.
